Hi Everyone,
Hailing from the small upstate NY town of Plattsburgh, I began with a rather humble upbringing. My father, being the disciplinarian in the family put me to work early which gave me a very hands-on approach to life. Do more and don't be afraid to get dirty and everything else will take care of itself. Being a fair student, I enjoyed sports more than the classroom. I excelled in baseball, and also played football, hockey and basketball.
After high school, I decided I wanted a warmer climate and earned money to move to Florida by working on a well drilling rig on the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base through one of the coldest winters on record. To this day, I look back on that time as one of the most difficult yet fulfilling periods of my life. I didn't know it at the time, but the experience formed much of what I believe today. The hardest work yields the greatest, most personally fulfilling results, and intense physical exertion brings the greatest confidence to easily face down the hardest tasks.
I've been a resident of South Florida since 1991. In 1995, I returned to school and enrolled at Florida International University. After attaining 60 credits, I was ready to test my experience and went back to work. I went into pharmaceutical sales and then started a painting business. Later, I went back to pharmaceutical advertising.
After a devastating divorce in 2003, I was 25 pounds overweight, depressed, unmotivated and broke. After the self pity stopped and the wounds healed, I managed to recover somewhat. However, I was still bankrupt... in some ways. I needed self-guidance and I began with a trip that would change a lot of the way I see the world. In May of 2006 I went to Nepal, spending 35 days in the Himalayan Mountains on a solo trek to Mount Everest. Interestingly, my goal of reaching Everest turned out to be a small stepping stone on the way to bigger realizations-those about myself and what I was doing with my life.
When I returned to the US, I was restless and unmoved by the proposition of going to work in anything involving 10 hours and a desk. Trust me, after the Himalayan, one absolutely can not be shut in! It was all very simple really. Climbing those mountains reminded me of how important intense physical energy is, and I rediscovered how much I enjoy it on a daily basis.
Today I'm here as a franchisee with the guys at Athletic Nation and finishing my degree in my spare time. In our founder, Dennis, I've found a shared no-nonsense philosophy and a way to share it with all of you who are tired of the magic pills and BS talk in fitness. Get down here. No more excuses. We'll enjoy an intense, old fashioned workout and I'll regale you with an Everest story.
Respectfully yours,
Rob Fenwick
