Athletic Nation Member Completes One Year Anniversary!
Dr. Dan Apple, DVM completed his one year anniversary at the San Jose, CA Athletic Nation gym today. Manny Petersen, Director of Development for Athletic Nation conducted an interview with Dr. Apple on his reflections of the past year...
Manny: Well you're a year older now at 55, what have been the changes?
Dr. Apple: Physically and medically the changes have been dramatic:
Blood pressure now at 120/80 from a year ago when it was 146/90. My blood sugar is now stable and I reduced my diabetic medicine by 50%! I now have normal levels for liver enzymes, cholesterol and my waist is now a 35 from a 38 a year ago.
Manny: What else in your life has been affected by getting back into shape?
Dr. Apple: My leg strength has increased dramatically and I now ski Black Diamonds. My energy level is much higher, I control the stress in my life much easier and my fiance sees the improvement in my entire life everyday.
Manny: In your opinion what makes Athletic Nation gyms different from all the other places someone can workout?
Dr. Apple: First of all you CAN'T duplicate the work out alone because of the level of intensity that requires a trainer pushing you. They (Athletic Nation) also make me accountable to show up and I am a busy guy who doesn't really have a lot of time. I like that there are no distractions and I have made a lot of friends at the gym. This really is a place that is serious about my health and well-being.

| Orthopedic Surgeon to Develop Raleigh-Durham area |
Dr. Kurt Ehlert executed an Area Development Agreement (ADA) to develop the entire Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina market with Athletic Nation Men's Personal Training Gyms.
As a medical doctor and president of his practice, Dr. Ehlert had been searching for a franchise opportunity that would compliment his medical practice and allow him to use his health background to assist men in changing their lives.
After discovering Athletic Nation and its focus on improving the health & fitness of men in the 30 year old to 60 year old age group (who have made up a large portion of his Orthopedic practice), Dr. Ehlert knew that the program developed by Athletic Nation was the answer both personally and professionally. |
Fartleks (Interval Running) Now Accepted by Mainstream
See what Lance Armstrong's coach says about Fartleks
Men's Health Article: Man vs. Machine.
Exercise machines weren't created to punish guys who eat too much. That's what diets are for. But men spend hours, day after day, churning their arms and legs and waiting for the StairMaster or treadmill to make their bellies vanish. The result: They make it about as far as the average rat. But your machine workout doesn't have to be a road -- or row -- to nowhere. "By decreasing the duration and varying the intensity of your exercise sessions, you'll get better results in less time," says Chris Carmichael, founder of Carmichael Training Systems and coach to Lance Armstrong.
Slowing way down and speeding way up again may get you in trouble on the interstate (and in the bedroom), but when it comes to cardiovascular exercise, it's the key for weight loss. I've already explained that speed interval workouts -- workouts that alternate high-intensity levels with lower-intensity effort -- help your body burn calories long after you've stopped working out.
You can use interval workouts any way you want -- running, cycling, swimming, on elliptical trainers, even walking if you alternate a speed walk and slow walk. To keep your workouts fresh and to keep your body guessing, you can also vary the intensity levels in different combinations.
(If you use exercise machines, don't choose the interval workout; choose the manual one and create your own intensities by adjusting it yourself. It'll give you greater control over the speeds and will help you burn fat faster.) |
